What is Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, often caused by aging, as proteins in the lens break down and clump together, blocking clear vision.

FAQ

What are cataracts, and what causes them?
Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, often due to aging, injury, or health conditions like diabetes. This cloudiness affects vision, making it difficult to see clearly.
Symptoms of cataracts include blurred or hazy vision, difficulty seeing at night, halos around lights, and sensitivity to bright lights. As cataracts progress, distinguishing colors may become more challenging.
Cataract surgery is typically recommended when vision loss from cataracts begins to interfere with everyday activities like reading, driving, or watching TV. Your eye doctor can help determine the right time for surgery.
The most common procedure is called phacoemulsification, where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens. The procedure is quick, usually taking just 10 to 15 minutes.
Many patients notice clearer vision soon after surgery, but full recovery can take a few weeks. Most people can return to normal activities within a few days.
There are different types of lenses available, including standard lenses and premium lenses, like multifocal or accommodating lenses, that can correct multiple vision problems.
After surgery, it’s important to avoid heavy lifting and protect your eyes from bright lights. Follow-up appointments are essential to monitor healing and ensure your vision improves as expected.
  • Improved Vision at Multiple Distances Multifocal lenses provide clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances, reducing the need for glasses or contacts after surgery.

  • Enhanced Quality of Life Many patients find that multifocal lenses make daily activities, like reading, using a computer, or driving, more convenient, without needing separate glasses for different tasks.

  • Long-Term Vision Stability Multifocal lenses can offer a permanent solution for presbyopia (age-related near vision loss), allowing for more independence from glasses as you age.
