What is Cornea?
Cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface that covers the front part of your eye playing a
crucial role in focusing light. Cornea works alongside the lens to focus images, making it vital
for your vision.
Because of its position and transparency, it is also highly sensitive and can be affected by various
conditions and injuries.
Indicators that you may be suffering from Corneal Diseases
Blurred or distorted vision
sensitivity to light
Redness & Tearing
Double vision in one eye
Eye discomfort or irritation

every step of the way.
Keratoconus
A condition where the cornea becomes thin and bulges into a cone shape, leading to distorted vision.
Dry Eyes
Occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the right quality of tears to keep the eyes moist and comfortable.
Corneal Dystrophies
A group of genetic disorders that affect the structure and function of the cornea, leading to vision problems.
Pterygium
A growth of tissue on the surface of the eye that can extend over the cornea, often due to prolonged exposure to UV rays.
Corneal Infections
Infections of the cornea, typically caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, leading to inflammation, pain, and vision problems.
Corneal Injuries/Trauma
Damage to the cornea caused by physical injury or trauma, such as scratches, cuts, or foreign objects in the eye.
Treatment Options for Corneal Diseases at F M Eye Hospital
At F M Eye Hospital, we offer both medical and surgical treatment options to address a wide range of corneal conditions, ensuring tailored care for your unique needs.
Medical Treatments
Eye Drops
Anti-inflammatory eye drops: These are used to reduce inflammation in the cornea,. They help alleviate discomfort and prevent further damage.
Antibiotic eye drops: Prescribed to treat or prevent bacterial infections, These drops are essential for preventing complications like corneal scarring and vision loss.
Antiviral eye drops: Prescribed to treat or prevent viral infections, These drops are essential for preventing complications like corneal scarring and vision loss.
Lubricating eye drops: These are used to relieve symptoms, helping to keep the eye moist and comfortable.
Contact Lenses
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses: lenses that help provide clear vision by providing a smooth surface over the cornea.
Scleral lenses: These large-diameter lenses are often used for severe cases of corneal disease, They provide more stability and comfort by creating a stable tear film between the lens and the cornea.
Hybrid lenses: These lenses combine the benefits of soft and rigid lenses. They provide a comfortable fit while offering the clarity of RGP lenses.
Steroids
Steroid eye drops: Steroids are prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent scarring. They help to control inflammation and prevent further damage to the corneal tissues.
Surgical Procedures
Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty)
Procedure: Involves replacing a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy donor cornea. This is done in cases of severe scarring or disease where the cornea cannot heal on its own.
Indication: Used for conditions like corneal scarring, keratoconus, and corneal dystrophies when other treatments have failed.
Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (C3R)
Procedure: A minimally invasive procedure to treat keratoconus. It strengthens the cornea by applying riboflavin (Vitamin B2) to the cornea and exposing it to ultraviolet (UV) light, creating stronger bonds between collagen fibers.
Indication: Primarily for keratoconus, to slow or halt its progression and improve vision.
Pterygium Surgery
Procedure: Involves the surgical removal of the pterygium (a growth of tissue over the cornea). A graft may be used to prevent recurrence of the growth.
Indication: Performed when pterygium interferes with vision, causes discomfort, or becomes recurrent.
Scleral Lenses
Procedure: While primarily a non-surgical treatment, scleral lenses are often used after corneal surgeries, including transplants, to improve vision and comfort by providing a smooth surface over the cornea.
Indication: Used for rehabilitation after corneal surgeries or for conditions like keratoconus where other treatments are not sufficient.
